Neuware - Subsole, colección de trece cuentos y segunda obra del escritor, es un libro bastante diferente del primero, ya que no solo se relatan allí las penurias de la vida campesina, las injusticias sociales, las costumbres populares, sino que también están presentes elementos de la alegoría y la f…antasía, incluso rasgos propios de lo que se podría considerar 'terror'. En estos cuentos el autor trata de hacernos ver que la vida rural no siempre es pacífica e idílica, sino que está atravesada por hechos dolorosos, tortuosos y con una fuerte presencia de la muerte. Algunos de los cuentos donde es posible encontrar rasgos fantásticos son 'El ahogado', 'El rapto del Sol' e 'Irredención'. En los dos últimos, Lillo abandona el protagonismo que generalmente le da a las clases populares en su lucha con los poderosos, para adentrarse en el mundo de lo onírico y las ilusiones, sin embargo, se trata de ilusiones tortuosas. Cabe destacar también el cuento 'Víspera de difuntos', que consiste en el crudo relato de una mujer que maltrata a una niña hasta darle muerte. Es uno de los cuentos más oscuros del libro. Se podría afirmar también que Subsole es más 'literario' que su precedente, ya que se observa una mayor diversidad en la temática, así como un mayor trabajo con el lenguaje. Tal vez la popularidad de Subterra y la preponderancia de sus temáticas sociales ha eclipsado esta veta diferente de Lillo. Pero el realismo de esta obra, sin duda, es interferido por 'escapes' de imaginación oscura.
