Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A 192 page work with much black & white illustration. This is the first book on British barns; most of the barns seen in this book have never been illustrated before. The author suggests and describes ways in which barns may still be used. If we don't use them, w…e will lose them! Volume itself has brown covers with sharp gilt lettering on the spine. A bit of wear at the head and tail of the spine. There is a worn spot on the top of the front cover, it is small about 1/8 of an inch. Thee is a brown spot on the top of the pages about a 1/2 inch by a 1/4 of an inch. Dust jacket is protected in an archival quality cover. Dust jacket has wear at the top of the spine and at the top of the front dust flap. All in all, given its age, a quite presentable copy; available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box.

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp. 192. Illustrated double title page. Numerous illustrations. Original publisher's tan cloth lettered gilt on spine. Beige illustrated dust jacket lettered in red and light brown on upper cover and in grey and red on spine. ISBN 0906969360 Book label st…ating the book belongs to the National Trust on front pastedown endpaper. Typed signed letter from Graham Hughes to Martin Drury of the National Trust written on headed notepaper from Arts Review, 16 St. James Gardens, London W11 dated Nov 1 1985 and stamped received 5 Nov 1985 and consisting of about 515 words in which he says 'of course I am delighted by your enthusiasm. Being the first book on the subject, it was very difficult to write; if it continues to go well, I hope in due course to expand it with some colour.' There are references to the National Trust who will stock the book in their shops. He goes on to discuss an exhibition on barns suggesting possible places for it to be held and says he is overworked and stretched financially and would have to be paid if he is to supervise it. He mentions Jasper Jacob as a possible designer and offers to introduce Drury to him. Copy of a letter from M. D. Drury, Historic Buildings Secretary to Graham Hughes at the above address dated 21 November 1985 consisting of about 190 words in which he says 'the answer I'm afraid is cold water for the time being.' He then says a new appeal for barns cannot be given priority and an exhibition specifically on barns is not something that can be considered at this time. Contact details for selling the book in National Trust shops attached on a post it note. Martin Drury was the first Historic Buildings Representative for the National Trust. He went on to become Director General of the National Trust from 1996 until his retirement in 2001. Graham Hughes (1926-2010) was art director of the Goldsmiths' Company and became pivotal in the renaissance in modern silver design, chairman of the Crafts Centre of Great Britain and owner for about ten years of the Arts Review. Hughes owned a converted barn in East Sussex. Very good. Very good in very good dust jacket.
