Anger Kills was co-written with his wife Virginia Williams and draws on research they conducted jointly as well as on methods developed through anger-reduction workshops they led together. The scientific foundation of the book rests on research linking hostile personality traits — specifically the combination of cynicism, anger, and aggression that Williams labels the toxic core — to elevated rates of heart disease and premature death. This work built on earlier studies, including landmark research linking Type A behaviour to cardiac risk, but narrowed the field considerably: Williams argues that it is not time pressure or competitiveness per se that kills, but hostility specifically. The book begins with a Hostility Questionnaire through which readers can assess their own level of cynicism, anger, and aggression. Those who score high are then directed to keep a Hostility Log — a record of the situations and people that reliably provoke a hostile response — as a preliminary step toward understanding their own patterns before attempting to change them.
