Hardcover 1st edition. Appears gently read and presents no noticeable wear to either the book itself or the dust jacket. Redford Williams is a physician and director of behavioral research at Duke University Medical Center, and the author of the earlier volume The Trusting Heart. Anger Kills was co-written with his wife Virginia Williams and draws on research they conducted jointly as well as on methods developed through anger-reduction workshops they led together. Anger Kills was first published by Times Books in 1993 and has remained in print in paperback editions through HarperCollins. It was featured on Oprah and 20/20 on its original release. The book opens with a frank statement of its scope: the anger in question is not the extreme kind that drives people to violence, but the everyday sort — the chronic low-grade hostility, cynicism, and aggression that courses through the minds and bodies of many otherwise ordinary people, and that the authors argue is quietly damaging their hearts. The scientific foundation of the book rests on research linking hostile personality traits — specifically the combination of cynicism, anger, and aggression that Williams labels the toxic core — to elevated rates of heart disease and premature death. This work built on earlier studies, including landmark research linking Type A behaviour to cardiac risk, but narrowed the field considerably: Williams argues that it is not time pressure or competitiveness per se that kills, but hostility specifically. The book begins with a Hostility Questionnaire through which readers can assess their own level of cynicism, anger, and aggression. Those who score high are then directed to keep a Hostility Log — a record of the situations and people that reliably provoke a hostile response — as a preliminary step toward understanding their own patterns before attempting to change them. The seventeen strategies that form the book's practical core range across a wide spectrum of intervention. Some are cognitive: recognizing when a situation genuinely warrants anger, reframing provocations, developing empathy for the perceived offender. Others are behavioural: thought-stopping, assertiveness as an alternative to aggression, the deliberate practice of tolerance and forgiveness. Others are physiological: relaxation techniques, meditation, aerobic exercise as a means of discharging arousal. The strategies are presented not as a mandatory program to be followed in sequence but as a menu from which readers are encouraged to select according to their own temperament and circumstances. The book received warm responses from both general readers and health professionals, praised for translating genuinely serious research into accessible and actionable guidance without sacrificing the scientific grounding that gives the recommendations their weight. Joan Borysenko described it as groundbreaking, practical, and eminently researched. It remains one of the more durable titles in the popular health literature on anger and cardiovascular risk.…
