Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, xi + 187 pages, NOT ex-library. Printed in Great Britain. Book is clean and bright, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show minor handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Gender quotas are a growing worldwide phenomenon, yet their political… implications remain under-researched. Using the prominent case study of France, which has the world's highest quota (fifty percent, or `parity') but low proportions of women in its parliament, Rainbow Murray looks at quotas from the perspective of the key actors responsible for them - political parties. Parity in France has posed many riddles: its implementation has varied across parties and elections and over time, and French parties pay millions of euros each year in fines for neglecting to implement a gender quota that they themselves introduced. Using Original data and insights, this book solves these riddles through a framework based on the parties' underlying motivations. By placing quotas within the broader context of party strategy and candidate selection processes, Parties, Gender Quotas and Candidate Selection in France demonstrates how quotas present conflicting interests for political parties which shape their behaviour when introducing, implementing and---on occasion---undermining gender quotas. -- Contents: Introduction [Why Gender Quotas?; Why Parties?; Why France?; Parties as Rational Actors; From Multiple Models to One; Overview of the Book]; French Parties and Parity in Context [Introduction; French Party System; Party Motivations in Ratifying Parity]; Candidate Selection, Supply and Demand [Party Candidate Selection Procedures; Significance of Centralisation; Selection Procedures in French Parties; Does Centralisation of Candidate Selection Assist Parity?; 'Supply and Demand' Model in France]; Electoral Competition Approach [Introduction; Overview of the Electoral Competition Approach; Electoral Competition in France; How Electoral Competition Affects Candidate Selection; Evaluating the Performance of Types of Candidate]; Institutional Approach [Introduction; Examining the 'Institutional' Approach; France's Institutions and Their Impact on Candidate Selection]; Ideological Approach [Introduction; Examining the Ideological Approach; 'Families Spirituelles': Comparing Ideologies and Attitudes to Quotas; Can Ideology Explain the Implementation of Parity?; Applying the Ideological Approach to French Parties]; Conclusion and the 'Party Priorities Model' [Introduction; Overview of the Key Themes; Models of Party Behaviour; Party Priorities Model; Overall Conclusions]; Appendix: Interviews; Notes; Bibliography; Index.
