The fourth edition. 8°. Later English translation of Zimmermann's famous philosophical reflections. The work was first published in German in 1756 and was first translated into English in 1779. "He wants to describe loneliness, not only as complete isolation, but also as being alone among people. First, he turns to the urge for sociability and finds it rooted in the natural disposition of human beings, which leads them to seek company. On the other hand, he considers any inclination towards sociability that arises solely from a poor mind, a desire for distraction and, ultimately, boredom to be reprehensible" (Ischer, J.G. Zimmermann. Life and Work (1893), p. 324 ff.). - Spine and edges slightly rubbed, frontispiece and title page slightly brown-stained, good decorative bound copy.…
