His paintings, watercolors, and prints are represented in major museum collections throughout the United States and are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Dove's work is characterized by its subtle blend of realism and abstraction, which he achieved through his unique technique of building up layers of translucent paint. His paintings often depict the landscape of the American Midwest, where he spent much of his life. Dove's work had a profound influence on many subsequent generations of artists, including Jackson *******, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko.
