Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This intellectually stimulating book explores the concept of Imperial Federation, a movement to unify the self-governing colonies of the British Empire. The author, a pioneer of the movement, makes a compelling case for federation, arguing that it would ensure fair representation and adequate control for the colonies, without eliminating their local authority. Written in 1902, the book draws on the author's firsthand experiences and observations during his travels throughout the Empire. By examining the political and economic conditions of the time, the author provides a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the Empire. This book offers valuable insights for understanding the evolution of the British Empire and the complexities of Imperial governance. It will be of interest to historians, political scientists, and all those seeking a deeper understanding of the forces that have shaped the world. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Victor Focillon, Frederick Huth, Alfred Hartley, William Wright-Nooth, Charles de Billy, Pierre-Antoine Mongin, Henry William Batley, David Young Cameron, John Andrew & Son (illustrator). Limited Edition. This is a two-volume copy of Old Mortality by the great Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott (1770-1832). It is the 6th of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. The Tale of Old Mortality was first published in 1816. It deals with the period of the Covenanters, featuring their victory at Loudoun Hill and their defeat at Bothwell Bridge, both in June 1679. A final section is set in 1689 at the time of the royalist defeat at Killiekrankie. These books are part of an incomplete set I have, which is also listed here. Between 1892 and 1894, the Boston publisher Estes and Lauriat published the collected Waverley novels. The introductions of each were written by the Scottish poet and critic Andrew Lang (1844-1912). In 48 volumes, they published a leather set, a marbled-cover set and a plain set. I have volumes of the plain set. By 'plain', I mean attractive navy blue boards with ivory title plates on the spine. The publisher has stated 'Large Paper'; the paper is thick and of best quality. There were 1000 copies of this set printed. This is set #679. That is stamped on each book in red. There is red type on the title page and on the tissue paper fronting each illustration. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. They are stated as original etchings by Victor Louis Focillon (French, 1849-1918), Frederick Huth, Alfred Hartley (English, 1855 - 1933), William Wright-Nooth (English b c 1858), Charles Bernard de Billy (French, b 1840), Pierre-Antoine Mongin (French, 1761 - 1827), Henry William Batley (English 1837-1907), David Young Cameron (Scottish 1865-1945), John Andrew & George Andrew (Boston). Volume 1 has a fold-out, which I imagine is a map. No one has ever opened it and I've left it alone. In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Volume II has some spots on the spine and covers. Volume II's covers are perfect. Both books have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. In the case of both books, the interiors are perfect. No foxing. It appears that no one ever read them.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The book titled ''Imperial Federation of Great Britain and Her Colonies: In Letters'' was written by Frederick Young in 1876. It is a collection of letters that discuss the concept of imperial federation, which was a political idea that aimed to unite Great Britain and its colonies into a single federal state. The book is divided into three parts, each containing a series of letters that explore different aspects of the imperial federation idea. The first part of the book discusses the need for imperial federation, highlighting the economic and political benefits that would arise from such a union. Young argues that the current system of colonial governance is inefficient and that a federal system would allow for greater cooperation and coordination between the colonies and Great Britain. The second part of the book explores the practicalities of implementing an imperial federation. Young discusses the potential challenges and obstacles that would need to be overcome, such as the role of the monarch, the powers of the federal government, and the representation of the colonies in the federal parliament. The final part of the book looks at the potential benefits of an imperial federation for the colonies themselves. Young argues that a federal system would allow the colonies to retain their autonomy while also benefiting from the resources and protection of Great Britain.Overall, ''Imperial Federation of Great Britain and Her Colonies: In Letters'' is an insightful and thought-provoking examination of a political idea that was widely debated in the late 19th century. It provides a valuable historical perspective on the relationship between Great Britain and its colonies and the challenges of governing a vast and diverse empire. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
