The complex was also a convent and church from 1563 to 1584. This copy has significant age toning to the sheets and dampstaining from long-ago. The dampstaining does extend into most of the plates to some degree. Good+ancient dampstaining to base of most pages top a greater or lesser degree few ancient repairs to small tears. Tiny wormhole through title-page and first sevwen sheets.

Primera edición de este libro mítico tocante a la historia, construcción, arquitectura y arte del Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, ricamente ilustrado con 18 finas láminas, la mayoría plegadas, representando vistas, plantas, secciones, y alzados del edificio, grabadas por los más reputados artistas como Bernardo Albistur, Nemesio López, Murguía y González, Juan Minguet, Hipólito Ricarte, Is. Fz. Pº., Juan de Palomino o Pedro de Villafranca. Construido entre 1563 y 1584, El Escorial es un complejo que incluye un palacio real, una basílica, un panteón, una biblioteca, un colegio y un monasterio. El palacio fue residencia de la familia real española y la basílica es lugar de sepultura de los reyes de España. Es una de las más singulares arquitecturas renacentistas de Europa. La arquitectura de El Escorial es rígida, simétrica y equilibrada. El edificio está construido en piedra granítica y dividido en tres zonas verticales. Toda la masa arquitectónica se simplifica a partir de cuadrados, rectángulos y círculos bajo la regla de la "Traza Universal". Está formado por 15 claustros, 13 oratorios, 86 escaleras, 88 fuentes, 9 torres y 73 esculturas. La iglesia es de planta de cruz griega. El libro incluye un capítulo dedicado a las particularidades del edificio y una descripción de sus jardines, decoraciones del exterior, estatuas, etcétera. Al fin un apéndice con el catálogo de los principales pintores, artífices y artistas que con sus obras han decorado San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Maravilloso ejemplar, muy limpio y con todos sus márgenes, las láminas bien plegadas y en primera emisión por la fuerza y claridad de la impresión. 295x205mm. (11½x8").

Historia y descripción del grandioso monumento, escrita por un monje profesor del mismo monasterio, dedicada a Carlos III, cuyo retrato se muestra grabado dentro de un medallón en la parte superior de la primera página, al principio de la dedicatoria, mientras el magnífico retrato de Felipe IV ocupa toda una lámina suelta, grabada por Petrus de Vilafranca en 1657, e inicia lo que el autor define como "parte última principal": la descripción de la Capilla Real del Panteón. Acompañan la obra un conjunto de espléndidas láminas, la gran mayoría plegadas, firmadas por distintos grabadores, que muestran los planos, el exterior y los detalles interiores de altares, esculturas y conjunto de imágenes artísticas del gran monasterio. La frase del título "Compendiada de la Descripción antigua" hace referencia a la obra de Francisco Santos, "Descripción breve del Monasterio de S. Lorenzo el Real del Escorial", monje jerónimo del mismo monasterio, publicada en Madrid, en 1657 (Palau, 300550). Buen ejemplar (Palau, 376974). Arquitectura. El Escorial.
