Er studierte an den führenden Universitäten in Deutschland und Österreich Physiologie, hielt Vorträge auf deuts…chen Naturforschertreffen und publizierte mehrerer Artikel. Seine erste größere Arbeit war eine Untersuchung über die Wirkung von Wärme und chemischen Stoffen auf elektromotorische Kräfte in Muskeln und Nerven [sic!]. 1870 wurde er Universitäts-Stipendiat in Christiania. 1873 wurde er als Professor und Leider an das dortige physiologische Institut berufen, das er selbst gegründet hatte. 1877 Professor der Medizin und Vorsteher des physiolog. Institutes der Universität. 1879 wurde er Mitglied in die Kommission des "Congres intern, pour l'etude des questions relatives à l'alcoolisme" berufen. (Zitat nach Stuchang bzw. Pagel).

Es ist dieselbe mit Rücksicht auf die ärztlichen Bedürfnisse ausgearbeitet, . " Vorwort "Über die Folgen einer Vermehrung der Blutmenge stellten Worm-Müller (1873) und Lesser (1874) ausgedehnte Versuche an, die das überraschende Resultat hatten, daß das intravasale Blutvolumen von Hunden bei langsamer Infusion erheblich vergrößert, sogar verdoppelt werden konnte, ohne daß in vielen Fällen extreme Blutdrucksteigerungen oder andere Störungen während der Versuche auftraten. Eine Infusion kleiner Blutmengen wurde von den Versuchstieren immer ohne wesentlichen Blutdruckanstieg toleriert, und dies wurde klar als das Ergebnis einer vasomotorischen Regulation erkannt. Damit konnten auch die Bedenken aus dem Wege geräumt werden, die besonders von klinischer Seite gegen die Anwendung von Infusionen bestanden. Als nach Landsteiners Entdeckung der Blutgruppeneigenschaften beim Menschen (1900) die klinische Anwendung der Bluttransfusion vom immunologischen Standpunkt aus möglich wurde, war also die hämodynamische Seite des Problems längst geklärt und die Pionierarbeit , die Ludwig und seine Schüler dazu geleistet hatten, beinahe vergessen."
