An Original Hand Written Letter and Signed by Engineer and Designer of Tower Bridge Sir John Wolfe Barry to to John Callcott Horsley designer of the first Christmas card. Dated 1902. Letter discussing work at the Houses of Parliament. Sir John Wolfe Barry 1836-1918, the youngest son of famous architect Sir Charles Barry, was an English civil engineer of the late 19th and early 20th century. His most famous project is Tower Bridge over the River Thames in London which was constructed between 1886 and 1894. After receiving a knighthood in 1897, he added "Wolfe" to his inherited name in 1898 to become Sir John Wolfe Barry. John Callcott Horsley. (1817 - 1903), English painter, illustrator, and designer of the first Christmas card. Size is 178 x 112mm. Condition is good. Folding crease. More images can be taken upon request. Ref17349. A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Sir John Wolfe-Barry, with the caption "He has engineered nothing better than his own fortunes". Sir John Wolfe-Barry (7 December 1836 - 22 January 1918) was an English civil engineer of the late 19th and early 20th century. His most famous project was the construction of Tower Bridge over the River Thames in London.

The first edition of this very scarce work.Illustrated with a colour folding map to a pocket to the rear.A detailed proposal discussing possible improvements on the harbour at Vizagapatam, led by consulting engineer, John Wolfe Barry.The harbour detailed in this work went on to be the Inner Harbour, build by the Bengal Nagpur Railway between 1927 and 1933. Today it is an important port which is the only natural harbour on the eastern coast of India, and is the fifth busiest in the country.Barry was a civil engineer best known for his work on Tower Bridge, constructed between 1887 and 1894.Collated, lacking the appendix sheets to the pocket. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing and discolouration to the boards. Spine is a little faded, with a small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, title page is a little age-toned. Folding map is a little spotted. Very Good. book.
