Soft cover. Condition: Good. Good Complete two-volume set of Abraham Wolf's substantial history of scientific, technological, and philosophical development during the eighteenth century. Revised by historian of science D. McKie, the work surveys the period's advances in mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, physics, meteorology, geography, chemistry, biology, medicine, psychology, economics, philosophy, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, mining, metallurgy, and other technical fields. Published as part of the Harper Torchbooks Science Library, with Volume I designated TB 539 and Volume II TB 540. Both volumes retain their striking matching illustrated wrappers designed by Guy Fleming. The set is profusely illustrated, with 172 illustrations noted for Volume I and 173 illustrations for Volume II. Condition: Good. Both volumes show considerable exterior age and handling wear. Wrappers have overall toning, rubbing, scattered spotting and soiling, occasional staining, edge wear, and creasing. Corners are bumped, softened, and in places curled or chipped. Spine edges and ends are rubbed, with small areas of surface loss and short tears; the upper wrapper edges lift slightly in places. Text-block edges are noticeably age-toned. Interior pages shown are generally clean and legible with moderate toning. No ownership inscriptions or extensive markings are visible in the photographed pages. Bindings remain intact in the photographed openings. Please review all photographs for the most accurate representation of condition. An extensive and still useful scholarly reference on the intellectual and technological history of the Enlightenment. The complete matching two-volume Harper Torchbook set is considerably more desirable than either volume offered separately, particularly with both Guy Fleming illustrated covers present. Carefully packed and shipped by KC Midwest Books. Domestic orders generally ship by USPS Media Mail unless another service is requested. International shipping is available; additional postage may be required for overseas orders. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policy. SCI 2b.

2 vols, cloth, 8vo, xvi, 349 + xv, 350-686 numerous plates and ills. From the blurb : "This is the first attempt to give a full portrait of the mind of the 16th and 17th centuries. The 17th century is known, and rightly known, as 'the century of genius'. In it the foundations of modern science and philosophy were laid. The present volume does full justice to that great age, and also furnishes all necessary information concerning what came immediately before and after it. Detailed accounts are given of all that is important in the first two centuries of modern science and philosophy. Mathematics, Mechanics, Astronomy, Physics, Meteorology, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Biology, Psychology, Economics, Statistics, Philosophy, and the progress of Technology are all adequately dealt with, and there are about 300 illustrations to elucidate the text. The author was well-known as a master of the art of lucid exposition, so that the general reader should have no serious difficulty in following profitably the story of the birth and rapid growth of the modern mind. The volume, moreover, is also sufficiently full and well documented to provide the student and the expert with a long-felt need. And enough biographical material is provided to give a human and historical touch to the extensive canvas." Very Good in slightly used dustwrappers.
