Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. This fascinating history, first published 160 years ago, is a treasure trove of descriptions of small events from the perspective of the early settlers of the border regions beyond the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains (and extending as far as Cincinnati and parts of Kentucky). It focusses mainly on the last half of the eighteenth century, when Williamsburg was the bustling capital of the Virginia Colony, and Patrick Henry resided in the Governor's Mansion. Grand plantations were flourishing along the James River, while in the wilderness, pioneers struggled against the elements of nature and the savages of the land they were trying to tame. The information was gathered mainly from pioneers and their children, thereby preserving these early family and local traditions. This book also covers the early history of Virginia and major events and leaders such as George Washington and some of the men who served with him before and after the Revolution. However, the main focus is on the many smaller deeds of the backwoodsmen, early settlers, and Indians. Illus., Index, 468 pp. [MC-W2000].…

See photos.** PS2023.0914** 319 pages. 4.25 x 7 inches** This is a first edition of one of the classic books concerning the hostile settlement of the Ohio country. The Chronicles of Border Warfare by Alexander S. Withers (1792-1865) is considered by Western antiquarians to form the best account of frontier life and Indian warfare that has been printed.** An excellent example of the genre of frontier history, the book focuses on the American settlement throughout the northwestern portion of colonial Virginia (an area which today encompasses parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) from the French and Indian War to the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and the ensuing clashes with the indigenous population. While the watershed events of the advancing frontier (the arrival of scouts, establishment of forts, and the ultimate triumph of the U.S. Army) give a structure to Withers' account, what the book is really about are detailed, often grisly, descriptions of contacts between the races. While the Chronicles purport to be essentially historical in nature, genealogists will appreciate the numerous references to the intrepid scouts and settlers along the frontier furnished by the author.** Because this book was issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed for local consumption, most copies were read until scarcely legible.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. Seller Inventory #009796"**. …

Some dampstaining to the bottom of the front boards at the spine, limited to some minor discoloration to the cloth; the contents are clean ad bright; a solid copy in very nice condition but for this limited flaw. Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover. Bound in full leather with faded maroon label on the spine. Leather is worn and rubbed at the corners and edges of boards, and hinges, but despite the wear the binding is altogether intact. It appears to be the original binding, from the remote 1831 outpost of Clarksburg - which was Virginia at the time but is West Virginia now. Text block tight, but pages much toned and foxed and stained. They are legible, but they have been through a lot. Title page dated 1831. No other dates. 319 pages plus a publisher's advertisement. This copy, in addition to being much-read, has a couple paragraphs circled by early reader, and a couple words written in the margins. Please email with questions or to request photos. An important title.…

Contact seller4-star sellerFull Leather. Condition: Very Good binding. 12mo. 319, [1 (blank)], [1 (advert)] pp. First edition. Bound in contemporary calf with title label on the spine; as usual, this copy is lacking the table of contents that was very occasionally inserted later. Binding is remarkably tight and solid; an owner name repeated on the front endpaper as well as what looks to be an aggressive bookplate removal on the pastedown that has left some of the binder's board showing; textblock is moderately to heavily foxed with occasionally light printing as is common with this edition; scattered pencil underlining, marginal bracketing, marginalia. Uncommon to find this title in such good condition. "Of this scarce book, very few copies are complete or in good condition. Having been issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed principally for a local circulation, almost every copy was read by a country fire-side until scarcely legible. Most of the copies lack the table of contents. The author took much pains to be authentic, and his chronicles are considered by Western antiquarians, to form the best collection of frontier life and Indian warfare, that has been printed" Field 1690. Streeter makes a note of it being one of the gorier compilations, Streeter 1107; Howes W-601, "aa"; Sabin 104928; Ayer 338; Haynes 21727.…
