Red cloth soiled with some surface mottling; spine cloth additionally toned with gilt lettering dulled but legible plus slight fraying at ends; front board decorate…d with centerpiece color pictorial paste-on and bright gilt stamping. Flaking to gilt top edge; toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Floral patterned endpapers in mauve, gilt, and white. Four-line non-authorial ink inscription along with owner's personal library ink stamp on front flyleaf; some scattered foxing and small stains to interior leaves. Four color plates (including frontispiece) with captioned tissue guard sheets on unpaged leaves; "Illustrations" list on page [5] cites two incorrect page numbers which might an issue point (frontispiece being incorrectly cited as opposite page 45 and last leaf indicated as being opposite page 122 whereas it is actually opposite page 112). DEVOTA was Augusta Evans Wilson's last novel and met with less success than her popular antebellum and postbellum works "Inez" (1850), "Beulah" (1859), "St. Elmo" (1866), and "Infelice" (1875). {Lit-Shelf#2}.

The original publishing date is sometimes cited as 1867, but see BAL 22984, which states the book was advertised as "no…w ready" in the American Literary Gazette and Publishers' Circular of December 1, 1866. See also Wright II: #2765 s.v. Wilson, Mrs. Augusta Jane (Evans). The author, born in Columbus, Georgia, was possibly the first woman in the US to exceed $100,000 in earnings from her writings. A scarce item in institutional holdings, with a 2023 OCLC search returning Atlanta History Center only.
