Hardcover. Condition: As New. "Sir M. Monier--Williams Sanskrit - English Dictionary is beyond any doubt the most consulted dictionary in the world of Sanskrit scholarship. Based on the seven volume Sanskrit-German Dictionary of Bohtlingk and Roth it has the enormous advantage of condensing the information contained in that great Sanskrit-German Dictionary. Sir Monier--Williams also went beyond Bohtlingk and Roth and added the meanings of many compounds that were not included in the German Dictionary. He wrote as well many cultural and mythological notes that help in the proper understanding of the Sanskrit terms. The dictionary is structured along etymological principles, the words being arranged under their roots. This device helps the student to relate words to their original based giving thereby a deeper insight into the structure of the language. The abundant allusions to cognate Indo-European languages and the textual references are an invaluable help in tracing the development of word meanings in the long history of Sanskrit Literature. The present work contains more than 180,000 words.".…

Previous owner's modest stamp to front endpaper, with "v. 54" written on the base of the spine (see scan), as to indicate placement in a private library. The text is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine is bright and fresh in appearance. A bit of spotting to the page edge, margin side, of the volume: unobtrusive, and not visible as the pages are read. The paper of the rear endpaper at the gutter is minorly cracked, but the webbing below is intact, and the binding is in no way loose, nor is the rear board wobbly. All in all a lovely copy of this increasingly hard-to-find report.…

The petition is by 'Freeholders and Ratepayers and others Residents [sic] in the parishes of Llanrhaiadr Mochnant Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr Pennant Hirnant and Llangynog being respectively interested in the Trade of the District and its general Welfare': 'We are of opinion that no Arguments that we can urge are required to convince you of the importance and desirability of having a Railway for the district in question. Many of the large number of signatures are arranged under the names of towns and townships (i.e. 'Cefncoch Township', 'LLanarmon Mynydd Mawr' and 'Hirnant'). Two lines, both later absorbed by Cambrian Railways, give a clue to the dating of the petition: the Oswestry and Newtown Railway, opened in 1855, and the Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whitchurch Railway, opened in 1861.…
