Includes Chinese Camp, the Mokelumne, Stanislaus, Murphy's, Murderer's Bar, Carson's, Mormon Gulch, the Tuolumne, Fremont Mill, Mariposa, Helvetia Quartz Mill, Grass Valley, El Rastra, Gold Bluff, Gold Hill, Table Mountain, French Corral, and the Shady Creek Canal. Includes illustrations drawn from 19th-century sources such as History of California (1850) and Picturesque California (1888), along with reproductions of period mining scenes including works after Frederic Remington. Preface by William R. Jones provides historical context and discusses the environmental and economic impact of early mining in California.
