Scion of the Pittsburgh oil and banking family, William Larimer Mellon, Jr., was married, the father of three, and a successful rancher in Arizona when, at thirty-seven, he read a Life magazine article about Albert Schweitzer's "reverence for life" that guided his mission hospital in a remote area of Gabon, Africa. Mellon immediately wrote to the famous humanitarian in Lambarene, expressing admiration of Schweitzer's life of service and the wish to engage in similar work with his wife, Gwendolyn. Schweitzer's reply in March 1948 was a lengthy letter of realistic encouragement. In time, Mellon received his medical degree from Tulane University and later established a well-equipped hospital in one of the poorest regions of Haiti, where, with his wife, he spent the rest of his life working as a physician and a community development engineer. The hospital continues to thrive. Brothers in Spirit brings together sixty-five of the letters written between 1947 and Schweitzer's death in 1965. A fine, crisp copy in custom full navy crushed morocco, with gilt rules, raised bands to spine, and marbled endpapers, with all edges gilt. The binding is not signed. Very thin crack to the front inner hinge, still as sound as if there were no crack. Faint smudge to top edge. Housed in a morocco-tipped slipcase, a trifle rubbed; very good. A family copy, bearing the gilt-stamped name of Farley Walton Whetzel to the front board. The book is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Mellon on the front free endpaper in an aged hand: "To my Granddaughter Anne Farley Walton Whetzel, William Larimer Mellon June 27th 1948." The limitation page indicates a run of 1,500 copies, of which this is number 27. However, the majority of the edition was issued in cloth, and it was issued unsigned. This is presumably one of a much smaller number of copies reserved for close family. Mellon was the nephew of Andrew Mellon, Pittsburgh's great industrialist. His daughter was Rachel Mellon Walton, and her daughter was Anne Farley Walton Whetzel. Whetzel went by the name "Farley Whetzel" in public life. A handsome copy of this jewel of Pittsburgh history. The presentation edition in this handsome binding is untraced at auction.…

This copy shows considerable wear with light chipping to the ends of the spine up to 1/4" deep; tips worn through; much rubbing and scratching to original binding. Uncommon with a family inscription.
