The author, William Herb and G.L. Jordan, sought to determine which forage crops were best suited to specific areas, th…ereby allowing farmers to cultivate the most profitable crops for their land. By establishing price-making factors and analyzing economic data from 1940 to 1951, the authors calculated that the average annual value of seed production for widely used forage crops was less than 1% of the nation's gross farm income. In spite of the low percentage, this book asserts that the pricing and utilization of seeds is still a topic worthy of attention because of the importance of these seeds in producing both livestock feed and preventing soil erosion. Herb and Jordan demonstrate that seed production is geographically concentrated. For example, most red clover seed is harvested in the corn belt, and most of the United States' alfalfa seed is produced in the West.
