Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - J. Frank Norfleet was a Texas rancher who fell victim to a gang of charismatic confidence men - rather than accept his financial loss, Norfleet pursued and caught these crooks, one by one.Norfleet describes making enquiries for land in his home state of Texas in 1919. In the process, he was approached by a charming man who claimed to represent an agent of land purchases. Eventually he was introduced to this agent, who made an impression of being a very busy and moneyed dealer in company stocks and land. However, the entire thing was a set up - through conniving guile, Norfleet was persuaded and robbed of $45,000: he had 'invested' in a stock exchange that did not exist. After the shock of the loss, Norfleet set about pursuing the gang across the United States. Using methods of disguise, and teaming up with the police in various territories, it is through sheer tenacity and persistence that he manages to apprehend the crooks. Prolific in states such as Florida and Kansas, the 'bunco rings' were comprised of the most ruthlessly proficient and notorious con men in the nation. Norfleet first captures Joe Furey, the gang's original ringleader, before continuing to Furey's lieutenants. Eventually, the pursuit results in numerous arrests and the recovery of stolen funds.…

Secondary title page offers contrasting title with that of primary title - "Original Sacred Harp. Denson Revision. 1971 Edition. Brown boards lightly rubbed with a few scuffs; patch of white discoloration at front board's top center. Ink ownership inscription at front pastedown's top left; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Preface (page 1) by Sacred Harp Publishing Company, Inc.; "Music" essay (page 3), "Introduction and History of The Original Sacred Harp" by Sacred Harp Publishing Company, Inc. on pages 5-11, pages 12-25 feature "Rudiments of Music" essay by Paine Denson divided into eight very brief chapters and glossary; musical scores and lyrics on pages 26-573; unpaged leaves at rear feature "Index of First Lines" and "Index Original Sacred Harp." Fa-so-la or shape-note singing, a method of vocal instruction for choruses unaccompanied by instrumentation, arose from the Protestant Singing School movement during the early 1800s in New England but only became popular in the rural churches of Southern Appalachia where the tradition continues today in northern counties of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Although not the earliest among the hundred or so shape-note tune books published since the mid-19th century, THE SACRED HARP, compiled by Benjamin Franklin White (1800-1879) and Elisha J. King (ca. 1821-1844) and first published in 1844, is undoubtedly the most influential hymnal in the movement. As preferences of shape note choral groups evolved and diverged during the late 1800s and early 1900s, White's and King's original compilation was amended and altered with some frequency including the derivative ORIGINAL SACRED HARP published in Atlanta, Georgia in August 1911 by reviser Joseph S. James and his music editor Seaborn McDaniel Denson. In turn, the James hymnal led to the first Denson Revision collaborated upon by Thomas Jackson Denson and Paine Denson which was issued in 1936 with, per OCLC, four successive editions for 1960, 1967, 1971, and 1997. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Norfleet' is a gripping first-hand account of one man's relentless pursuit of justice across the early 20th-century American landscape. After being swindled out of his life savings by a professional gang of international confidence men, Texas rancher J. Frank Norfleet refused to accept his loss. Instead, he transformed himself into a self-taught detective, embarking on an epic four-year man-hunt that spanned thousands of miles across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This remarkable narrative details the intricate methods used by swindlers of the era and the even more remarkable tenacity of a man determined to bring them to account. Through Norfleet's own words, readers gain insight into the high-stakes world of stock market scams and 'big store' con games that proliferated during the 1920s. Part true crime thriller and part western autobiography, 'Norfleet' remains a classic testament to individual perseverance and the rugged spirit of the American West. The work offers a unique perspective on the evolution of crime and law enforcement during a transformative period in American history, documenting how a private citizen successfully dismantled a sophisticated criminal network that had eluded professional authorities. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
