Die kommentierte Edition präsentiert den Briefwechsel der beiden… bedeutenden Museumsdirektoren, Wilhelm von Bode (1845-1929) in Berlin und Hans Posse (1879-1942) in Dresden, die erstmals und in chronologischer Reihenfolge ineinander verzahnt betrachtet werden. Bei den hier versammelten 147 Briefen handelte es sich um Konvolute, die in den jeweiligen persönlichen Nachlässen enthalten waren. Wilhelm von Bode und Hans Posse führten in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine gehaltvolle und freimütige (Amts-)Korrespondenz, in der sich die deutsche Kunst- und Geistesgeschichte des Kaiserreiches und der Weimarer Zeit spiegelt. Der Briefwechsel dokumentiert viel von jenem imperialen Gefüge von Geist und Macht - oder auch von Geistes- und Machthunger -, das das spätwilhelminische deutsche Kaiserreich geprägt hat. Während sich darin das Bild des Berliner Museumsgenerals Bode um interessante Facetten erweitert, gewinnt die bislang lückenhafte Biographie Hans Posses wesentliche Bausteine hinzu. So wird in der Korrespondenz zwischen Bode und seinem einstigen Schüler dessen spätere Entwicklung zu Hitlers Sonderbeauftragtem für das geplante Führermuseum in Linz sichtbar, nachdem Posses Lebenswerk, die Dresdener Sammlung der Moderne, in der Aktion "Entartete Kunst" vernichtet worden war. Die Briefe werden vollständig und möglichst unverändert wiedergegeben, der Kommentar erklärt Sachverhalte und Hintergründe und bietet weiterführende Literaturhinweise.
