Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. Hardcover. An exhibition catalog featuring the art of Kehinde Wiley, the artist chosen to paint Obama's official portrait. 11 1/4" X 8 3/4". 40pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of unclipped dust jacket. Gentle rubbing and a couple spots of toning to covers and edges of red silk over boards. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. An overall clean, solid copy of this catalogue published in conjunction with with exhibition, The World Stage: China, presented at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center from February 11-May 6, 2007. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Exhibited at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin, The World Stage: China is a series of monumental paintings that continues his investigation into the blurry divide between urban/highbrow and traditional/contemporary representations. These paintings evolved as a result of an invitation to Wiley to start a studio in Beijing. While interested in working in China, Wiley felt it was important for the paintings to embody a specific reference to Chinese culture. In his discovery of historic propaganda posters from China's Cultural Revolution, Wiley found a correlation between the ways in which African American identity has and continues to be manufactured and manipulated by both the media and society, and how Chinese national identity was distorted during the Maoist era.(Publisher).

First Edition. Limited edition box set with reproductions of Wiley's paintings from 2002 to 2004. Housed in a two-part box which contains a pair of white gloves and a chapbook providing an overview and interpretation of Wiley's work, along with a set of 18 offset lithographs in color (8 ½" x 11" with one folding 17" x 11" plate) on smooth wove paper, interleaved with tissue. Signed by Kehinde Wiley and numbered "499/1000" on the artist's monogram label affixed to the inside of the portfolio box. This portfolio box set was published in conjunction with Wiley's first major institutional exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The inspiration began while Wiley was a participant in the Artist-in-Residence Program at the Studio Museum in Harlem. After picking up a police sketch of a young black man from a neighborhood sidewalk, he began to examine the negative portrayals of black men in mainstream media. Passing/Posing refers to the tension created by the need to attain the privilege and power traditionally associated with whiteness and the desire to preserve one's identity and define oneself as an individual. It also alludes to the artist's specific efforts to redefine and affirm black identity through a new brand of portraiture: the depiction of young men from Harlem as saints and angels, in poses inspired by Renaissance and Baroque paintings. Born in Los Angeles, Wiley (b.1977) is based in New York. He was commissioned to paint former President Barack Obama's portrait for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

Condition: New. First Edition. Interscope, 2022. Double vinyl record album issued with an original, museum-quality giclee print by Kehinde Wiley as the album cover, housed in a custom Gucci box. Size: 11.5 x 11.5 inches. Limited Edition of only 100 prints individually numbered in the lower left-hand corner, and HAND-SIGNED by Kehinde Wylie in the lower right-hand corner. CONDITION: Fine/As New. SIGNED. For this reimagined album cover, Kehinde Wiley portrays Dr. Dre as a Medieval or Renaissance knight by employing the artistic trope he is perhaps best known for: painting portraits that feature people of colour in the traditional settings of Old Master paintings. Most famously, in 2017 Wiley was commissioned to paint Barack Obama, becoming the first Black artist to paint an official portrait of a President of the United States. Here again, with Dr. Dre, his work references European portraiture that positions contemporary black sitters, from a range of ethnic and social backgrounds, in the poses of the original historical, religious or mythological figures on the Old Master paintings, and thereby conferring in the process his contemporary black sitters with a similar old-world fame and status. As such, Wiley's images as part quotation, part intervention raise questions about power, privilege, identity, and above all highlight the absence or marginalisation of Black figures within European art.
