Bildausschnitt ca. 10 x 15,5 cm. NW 783.- Abgezogen von der Original-Kupferplatte der Ausgabe 1680.- Die Burg Wildegg wurde erstmals 1188 urkundlich erwähnt, damals noch unter dem Namen Wildekk. Der wirkliche Zeitpunkt der Beendigung des Burgenbaues liegt vermutlich zwischen 1136, dem Datum der Errichtung des Stiftes Heiligenkre…uz, und 1188. Vor 1136 dürfte Wildegg noch nicht existiert haben, da im Stiftungsbrief des nur etwa vier Kilometer entfernten Stiftes Heiligenkreuz kein Wildegger als Zeuge auftritt. Das Kloster wurde im Jahre 1133 von Cisterciensern gegründet. Im Jahr 1621 wurde die Burg stark erweitert. Von den vermehrt einfallenden Türken, vor allem im Zuge der Zweiten Türkenbelagerung 1683 wurde sie aber wieder stark beschädigt. Im Jahr 1923 wurde die Burg von einem katholischen Wanderverein gepachtet und in den nachfolgenden Jahren renoviert. 1945 wurde sie zeitweise von den Einheiten der Waffen-SS besetzt.
