Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. 29 VOLUME COMPLETE FACSIMILIE SET, BOUND IN TWO BOOKS. A Dictionary of Books Relating to America, From Its Discovery to the Present Time; Begun by Joseph Sabin, Continued by Wilberforce Eames, and Completed by R. W. G. Vail for the Bibliographical Society of America. Hardcover. Bound in matching rust-brown linen cloth, boards are plain with gilt lettering on the spine. This facsimile set holds a miniaturized copy of all 29 volumes begun by author/compiler Joseph Sabin's Volume I, (originally published in New York in 1868), through the final Volume 29, published by N. Israel (Publishing Department) in Amsterdam, 1962. Book one contains Volumes 1 beginning at "A", through page 218 of Volume 15. Book two picks up at page 219 of Volume 15, and concludes with "Zewy" through the end of Volume 29 at page 305. Book two also includes Library Location Symbols and Abbreviations for library locations used in the Sabin Directory at the back. Pages contain eight miniaturized facsimile pages each, in four columns, respectively. Each volume is generally in excess of 500 pages. When standing side-by-side on a shelf, this set spans about 4.25 inches. ABOUT JOSEPH SABIN: Born in 1821 to 1881, Joseph Sabin was a Braunston, England-born bibliographer and bookseller in Oxford, Philadelphia, and New York City. He compiled the "stupendous" multivolume Dictionary of Books Relating to America, considered a "bibliophilic monument;" and published the American Bibliopolist, a trade magazine. His sons Robert T. Sabin and William W. Sabin also worked in the bookselling business. At the sale of the library of the musicologist and rare book collector, Edward Francis Rimbault, in 1877, Sabin served as an agent for the banker and collector, Joseph W. Drexel, in his large purchase of portions of the 1877 auction, held in London from July 31 to August 7. (Wikipedia) CONDITION: Set shows some overall shelf wear, and light soling. Even as there is some discoloration at the edges, and book two bears a red stain at the head, pages themselves are clean and free from marginalia or annotation. Though very small, text is still quite readable, although a magnifying glass may become your best friend when reading. This set would make a fantastic gift for any bibliophile, and a great reference for a collector of early American books. Additional photographs available upon request. At over 8 lbs., additional shipping will likely be needed. Full refund if not satisfied.
