Three-Quarter Leather. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition Thus. This is copy no. 488 of a limited edition of 500 copies in facsimile. Printed and bound by Kyodo Printing Company, Tokyo, Japan. The first edition was published in 1845 by Smith, Elder & Co., Cornhill, London. The plates were lithographed from original drawings by…various artists taken on the spot at various locales in New Zealand. Text in English. 21.75 x 14.5 inches. Three-quarter morocco in deepest green, with Kelly green buckram boards, and with gray-green pastedowns. Handsome hubbed spine, and with crisp gilt-stamped lettering. Virtually unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. The leather appears unblemished except for trivial rubbing to the spine head and tail and to the four corners. Overall the binding is immensely clean. Text block very solidly attached to the binding. With unnumbered pages of plates. With a color vignette in the title page plus XV color plates, including five fold-out panoramic views of Port Nicholson/Wellington, town and harbor of Nelson, Blind Bay, Ruamahanga, and New Plymouth. The book is exceptionally clean and free of demerits. A Near Fine copy. Wicksteed; King; Saxton; Brees (illustrator).
