In 1876 Harry Wickham, a British explorer and latterly an aspiring rubber planter in Pará state, Brazil, satisfied a contract with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew for seeds of Hevea brasiliensis, the Brazilian rubber tree. Kew was, besides being… a renowned scientific center, in the ready service of the British colonial project. Taking no chances, Wickham provided to Kew 70,000 potentially viable seeds. Only a small percentage of Wickham's seeds sprouted successfully, but those seedlings were enough to trigger the commercial cultivation of the rubber tree in the East, with transformative social consequences. Nowhere was that more true than in Malaya. In the 1930s Malaya was the world's leading producer of rubber, and control of Malayan rubber became a key objective for Japan in World War II.

He led his army from Spain over the Alps into Italy, bypassing Roman and allied land garrisons, and Roman naval dominance. The exact route of Hannibal's march through the mountains has been much debated by historians. This volume outlines the opinions of Livy, Polybius, and a host of later historians and writers (D'Anville, Gibbon, General Melville, De Luc, etc.); the authors suggest that Hannibal's route to Turin was via the Little St. Bernard Pass. Chapters herein discuss the early historical exploration of the Alps, and describe Hannibal's march through Spain, Gaul, across Mont du Chat, ascent to the summit of the Alps, passage through the Little St. Bernard, descent, the siege and capture of Turin, and more. The covers are like new, as is the backstrip, with bright, bold lettering. Joints and hinges fully complete, binding firm. Recent endpapers. The text pages are untrimmed and are fresh, clean, crisp and bright, as is the folding map. No foxing or stains. The lithographed plates are also clean, but mild offsetting is present on the opposing text pages. No evidence of previous ownership. This is a very handsome copy of an informative historical treatise. Not in Neate or Perret. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
