This is the fourth of the series of check lists of the birds of Northern Rhodesia, the original of which was published in 1934, and the last in 1949. This new list is more than a mere check list, for it contains details of sub-specific variation within the territory, distribution, ecology, breeding seasons ands various other data. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the corners and slightly heavier bumping to the spine ends. The spine is slightly faded. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and rubbing and chipping along the top edge. The spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked with small pieces missing and there is a small hole in the spine.

Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term biological diversity to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world.
