As most people know, darts has been played for hundreds of years. We know that it was played in Ireland in the 16th century and we also know that it was played, according to the history books, aboard the Mayflower by the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620. Apart from these well known facts it is very difficult to obtain much more information about the origins of the game. It is also true to say that nobody knows how the numbers on the dartboard originated. I suppose it is quite reasonable to assume that our modern day game is a simple progression from the medieval days, when our forefathers used to throw foot long arrows at a log end to test their skill. These arrows were used in battle at close-quarters and were heavily weighted at one end. Over a long period of time the game slowly progressed towards its present state and different variations were adopted. It was not until the 20th century that the first all-metal barrel was made and not until about the mid-1930s that one could actually buy a set of darts, as before they had only been sold singly. It was in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s that now famous names started to emerge. When the legendary Jim Pike, Joe Hitchcock and Tommy Barrett used to play, they could not have realised that they would come to be looked upon as the first real stars of our great sport today. The game of darts really began when players of the above calibre took to the sport, and helped to make it the most popular of indoor games Contents in 20 Chapters: The Old Game, the New Game, The Beginning for Me, Various Boards, Approved Board, Equipment, Practice, Clothing, Finishing Shots, Common Courtsey, Fitness, Games to Play, Tournaments, Rules, The British Darts Organization, The Unknowns, The Professionals, The Female Front, The Organizers, and Useful Addresses.
