Las reglas que gobiernan la denominación de las algas, los hongos y las plantas se revisan cada seis años durante las reuniones de la Sección de Nomenclatura de los sucesivos Congresos Internacionales de Botánica. La edición española previa, publicada hace diez años, se basaba en los resultados del XVI Congreso… de San Luis, Missouri, de 1999. La edición en español del International Code of Nomenclature que tienen en sus manos es la traducción fiel de la versión oficial inglesa y se publica casi simultáneamente con ella. Incorpora las decisiones tomadas en el XVIII Congreso Internacional de Botánica celebrado en Melbourne, Australia, en 2011. Los cambios en las reglas de nomenclatura que se decidieron en el XVII Congreso de Viena, en 2005, tal vez no fueron de alcance suficiente como para justificar su traducción al español. Esta vez la situación es diferente. En Melbourne no solo se cambió el nombre al Código sino se transformaron algunas de sus leyes fundamentales, como la obligación de utilizar el latín en la descripción de las especies nuevas o la necesidad de publicarlas impresas. Era preciso, por tanto, que los botánicos, ficólogos y micólogos de habla hispana dispusieran lo más pronto posible del texto actualizado y completo con las nuevas leyes que rigen los nombres de los organismos de su especialidad. Confiamos en que esta edición satisfaga las necesidades de todos ellos.
