Named for its likeness to the flesh and seeds of the pomegranate (Latin granatus), garnet is most commonly thought of as a red gemstone, but it actually occurs in all…colors of the spectrum. In fact, garnet is a complex group of fifteen separate mineral species, which are sometimes hard to differentiate visually and more often than not occur together in the same specimen. Six of these species - almandine, andradite, grossular, pyrope, spessartine, and uvarovite - are regularly featured in mineral cabinets and jewelry. Garnets are also valued for much more than their aesthetics: they are important rock-forming minerals enhancing our understanding of geologic events; they are commercially valuable as abrasives; they are part of an 'indicator' mineral suite used by geologists to locate diamond deposits; and they are great crystallographic examples with their textbook-perfect dodecahedral shapes. The first section examines foundational concepts, addressing questions of what emulation involves and what ecological reasoning substantiates it.These include a broad overview, a detailed review of emerging forest management paradigms and their global context, and an examination of the ecological premise for emulating natural disturbance. This section also explores the current understanding of natural disturbance regimes, including the two most prevalent in North America: fire and insects. The second section uses case studies from a wide geographical range to address the characterization of natural disturbances and the development of applied templates for their emulation through forest management. The emphasis on fire regimes in this section reflects the greater focus that has traditionally been placed on understanding and managing fire, compared with other forms of disturbance, and utilizes several viewpoints to address the lessons learned from historical disturbance patterns. The most up to date research findings have been divided into three volumes: ¿ the Science ofCl…imate Change (working group I), ¿ the Impacts, Adaption and Mitigation of Climate Change (working group II), and ¿ the Economic and Social Dimensions ofClimate Change (working group III) There is a general consensus that a serious change in climate can only be avoided if the future emissions of greenhouse gases are reduced considerably from the business as usual projection and if at the same time the natural sinks for greenhouse gases, in particular that of CO , are maintained at the present level or 2 preferrably increased. Forests, forestry and forestry industry are important parts of the global carbon cycle and therefore they are also part of the mitigation potentials in at least a threefold way: 1. During the time period between 1980 and 1989 there was a net emission of CO from changes in tropical land use (mostly tropical deforestation) of 2 1. 6 +/- 1 GtC/a, but at the same time it was estimated that the forests in the northem hemisphere have taken up 0. 5 +/- 0. 5 GtC/a and additionally other terrestrial sinks (including tropical forests where no clearing took place) have been a carbon sink ofthe order of l. 3 +/- l.
