Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. WARWICK, Sir Philip. Memoires of the Reign of King Charles I. Containing the Most Remarkable Occurrences of that Reign, and Setting Many Secret Passages Thereof in a Clear Light. With Impartial Characters of many Great Persons on both Sides, who chiefly governed the Counsels and Actions of that Scene of Affairs. Together with a Continuation to the Happy Restauration of King Charles II. London: Printed for Ri. Chiswell, in St. Paul's Church-Yard; and to be sold by John Pero, at the Swan in Little Britain, 1702. Second Edition. Early eighteenth-century edition of Sir Philip Warwick's important royalist memoir of the reign of King Charles I, with a continuation to the Restoration of Charles II. Warwick was closely connected with the royalist cause during the Civil War and served in circles close to the Stuart court; his memoirs remain a significant contemporary source for the political and court history of the period. Illustrated with the engraved portrait frontispiece of Sir Philip Warwick facing the title page. Bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands to the spine. The volume retains attractive layered provenance. The front pastedown bears the engraved armorial bookplate of James Frampton, with the family motto "Perseverando". This is very probably James Frampton of Moreton, Dorset, a member of the long-established Dorset gentry family; James Frampton of Moreton, 1769-1855, is recorded as Lord of the Manor at Moreton, Dorset, and as a prominent local figure. The book also bears the later ex-libris label of C. Vivian Henry, whose private library included works of English history, literature, travel and antiquarian interest. A desirable early English historical work, with strong Stuart, Civil War and Restoration interest, retaining its early binding and notable ownership history. Condition: Contemporary full calf, worn. Boards heavily rubbed and scuffed with surface loss and wear to edges and corners. Spine rubbed, with raised bands visible; spine label absent or largely lost. Hinges/joints worn, with some weakness visible at the front inner joint. Front pastedown and endpapers age-toned and marked, with bookplates as described. Engraved portrait frontispiece present. Title page complete. Text block generally sound and legible throughout, with expected age toning, occasional spotting, marks and light staining. A genuine early eighteenth-century copy in untouched antiquarian condition, showing external wear but retaining considerable historical character. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. Additional photographs are available on request.…
