Quarto, bound in full red morocco by Riviere & Son with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt presidential seal to the front panel with white and blue morocco onlays, gilt arms and motto of George Washington to the rear panel with white and blue morocco onlays and his gilt signature in facsimile, centerpieces within quintuple gilt ruling with star emblems at each corner, blue morocco doublures with multiple gilt presidential signatures, blue silk endpapers. This complete series of autographs of the first 34 Presidents of the United States contains the signature of each mounted on an album leaf opposite a loosely tissue-guarded engraved portrait of each. Pages 7-16 are the reports to the trustees from the physician James Jackson (pp. 7-12) and from the surgeon John Collins Warren (pp. 12-16). INSCRIBED: "Hon. Robert Rantoul/ Sir,/ You are respectfully invited/ by the Trustees, to visit the Hospital." Last letter of "invited" is slightly trimmed. "Robert Rantoul was actively involved in local and state government. He was appointed Justice of the Peace and acting trial justice for Beverly from 1808 to 1858. Rantoul was appointed to the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1809. He was reelected to this position annually until 1820. He was chosen as state Senator for Essex County for the years 1820, 1821, and 1822 [this was when this copy was given to him]. He then served as Representative in the General Court from 1823 to 1826 and again from 1828 to 1833. Rantoul was a member of the state conventions to amend the Constitution in 1820 and 1853. He also delivered the address to General Lafayette during the general's tour through Beverly in 1844" (Historic Beverly website).
