XX [From the Introduction] "Archeological investigations along the Missouri River in the Dakotas have a long and respectable history. However, we have yet to outline all the important cultural events in the region despite the perceptive work of pioneers and recent intensive excavations. Many problems of major importance are only now emerging. The situation is familiar to most archeologists?the more deeply one becomes immersed in the archeology of an area, the less confidence one feels. Where the picture once seemed clear, new data or changing nuances of judgment undermine old interpretations and indicate new directions for research. In 1961, when work commenced, only a few villages that fall within what Lehmer (1954) has called the "Middle Missouri Tradition" were described in detail. There was no reason to believe that these sites were contemporaneous. Apparently they represented several foci but, lacking comparative material, the temporal range, geographic distribution, and other matters of importance remained largely speculative. This much was patent, however: the sites fell nicely into two units, i.e., a southern group comprising the Monroe, Anderson, and Over foci (the Chamberlain Aspect), and a northern group consisting of the Thomas Riggs, Huff, and related sites. Actually, the geographic range is neither as regular nor as clear-cut as such a division implies, but the Thomas Riggs-like sites (Extended Middle Missouri Horizon in more recent usage) are most abundant upstream from Pierre, South Dakota, while those of the Chamberlain Aspect (Initial Middle Missouri Horizon) are more frequent to the south. Both the northern and southern units have much in common, but there is a basic distinction: the pottery in sites of the former usually has smoothed or simple stamped surfaces; that of the latter is smoothed or cord roughened. There are other ceramic differences, but the dichotomy of surface treatment has been thought to be basic. The cord wrapped paddle technique is an early one in the Plains and, indeed, some of the sites of the southern division are known to antedate those to the north. Nevertheless, there are remarkable continuities, and we are aware that there is a temporal overlap despite the lack of clear-cut evidence. Our principal concern here is with the southern unit?specifically those sites in the lower Big Bend Reservoir, approximately 70 river miles downstream from Pierre.".
