"The Therapeutic Problem in Bowel Obstructions", by Owen Wangensteen, Springfield: Charles C. Thomas, 1937, First edition, 360 pages with photographs, measures 6 3/4" X 10" in original cloth. Some age blemishing to covers and "Olive You Very Much" inscription to front free endpaper - overall a good solid copy. "In 1937, Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen published his landmark monograph, "The Therapeutic Problem in Bowel Obstructions: A Physiological and Clinical Consideration". This work revolutionized the treatment of intestinal obstruction, contributing to a dramatic drop in mortality rates from roughly 40%-60% down to less than 5%. He proved that gaseous distension in the bowel was primarily caused by swallowed air rather than bacterial toxins. He developed a bedside device for continuous gastric suction through a nasal catheter (the "Wangensteen tube") to remove this air before it could reach the intestines. His methods allowed roughly 50% of patients to recover spontaneously through decompression and IV fluids, avoiding risky emergency surgeries." "Owen Harding Wangensteen (1898 - 1981) was an American surgeon who developed the Wangensteen tube, which used suction to treat small bowel obstruction, an innovation estimated to have saved a million lives by the time of his death. He founded the Surgical Forum at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and was renowned for his surgical teaching. Amongst his most notable students were Walton Lillehei, Christiaan Barnard, K. Alvin Merendino, Norman Shumway and Edward Eaton Mason. He made contributions to surgical practices in other areas, including appendicitis, peptic ulcers and particularly gastric cancer. In his later life, he showed a keen interest in the history of medicine and co-wrote a number of books on the subject with his wife.".
