Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Red cloth blind stamped cover with gilt is modestly scuffed, head cap is rubbed, tail cap is frayed, corners are bumped and worn but cover is in good+ condition. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Pages are lightly toned but clean and in good condition. Color illustrated frontispiece, B&W illustrated plates, B&W illustrations.

1 leaf. Two vertical folds. Good. Letterhead: 1201 Eutaw Place. Baltimore, MD. The Letter: March 14, 1921/ Master Joseph Dumska [sic],/ 651 Portland St., Baltimore./ My dear Joseph:/ I shall be greatly interested to note the result of the/ operation performed on you at the Johns Hopkins Hospital by Dr. Dandy/ on the 15th of July, 1915./ Will it be convenient for you to meet me in my office/ on the fourth floor of the Surgical Building, Johns Hopkins Hospital,/ on Friday morning, March 18, at 10.00 o'clock?/ Very truly yours,/ W. S. Halsted [signed], Surgeon-in-Chief." On the verso of Halsted's letter, the patient Joseph Dumsha wrote in pencil: "Dear sir:/ As I am working it would/ be impossible for me to see you. I am/ glad to say that the operation was/ perfect. I gained weight right after I/ left the hospital and have been healthy/ ever since. Thanking you for inquiring/ I remain,/ Yours truly/ Joseph Dumsha." In the letter the last name is "Dumska", but the writing by the patient suggests it is "Dumsha". In addition, Dumsha is a much more common last name. The surgeon who performed the operation was Dr. Walter Dandy.
