Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. SENECA MORPHOLOGY AND DICTIONARY, Wallace L. Chafe, hardcover, probable first edition, 1967. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Loose errata sheet tucked in. Not a library book or remainder. The dark blue cloth boards are in very good condition (light corner bumping, a few spots). 12 x 9 ½, 126 pages, 26 ounces XX [From the introduction] This work is an extended description of the structure of words in the Seneca language. A description of the grammar of Seneca words has already been published in the International Journal of American Linguistics (Chafe, 1960, 1961a). A major omission from that work, however, was a comprehensive list of the verb roots, noun roots, and particles of the language, with specification of their grammatical peculiarities and examples of their use. The present work is designed to fill that gap. Its chief purpose is to make available a Seneca dictionary, or lexicon. XX [Wikipedia] The Seneca (lit. Great Hill People) are a group of Indigenous Iroquoian-speaking people who historically lived south of Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes in North America. Their nation was the farthest to the west within the Six Nations or Iroquois League (Haudenosaunee) in New York before the American Revolution. For this reason, they are called The Keepers of the Western Door. In the 21st century, more than 10,000 Seneca live in the United States, which has three federally recognized Seneca tribes. Two of them are centered in New York: the Seneca Nation of Indians, with five territories in western New York near Buffalo; and the Tonawanda Seneca Nation. The Seneca-Cayuga Nation is in Oklahoma, where their ancestors were relocated from Ohio during the Indian Removal. Approximately 1,000 Seneca live in Canada, near Brantford, Ontario, at the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation. They are descendants of Seneca who resettled there after the American Revolution, as they had been allies of the British and forced to cede much of their lands. XX Seneca is the language of the Seneca people; it is an Iroquoian language, spoken at the time of contact in the western part of New York. As of 2022, an active language revitalization program is underway.
