Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First English Edition. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 160 pp, introduction: Noa Noa: Gauguin's Original Manuscript; Three More Stories from Noa Noa; Notes to Gauguin's Manuscript. The Facts and Fictions of Noa Noa: I. The History of Noa Noa; II. The Collaboration with Morice; III. Maori Mythology: Tehamana and Moerenhoug; IV. The Purpose of Noa Noa: The Primitive and the Civilized; V. Noa Noa: 'Fragrant'; Correspondence of Noa Noa; bibliography, list of color and b&w illustrations; index. Translated by Jonathan Griffin: First English Edition, 1985. "Presents Gauguin's original account of his experiences in Tahiti, discusses the mythology, fact, and fiction which makes up the work, and traces the history of Gauguin's manuscript. He was no ordinary traveller and Noa Noa is no ordinary traveller's tale. Gauguin had left Europe in 1891 in search of an innovcent island paradise, only to discover a Tahiti that was overrun by European civilization. Noa Noa was to be the means of explaining his first Tahitian paintings ot the Parisian public when he returned in 1893 to France. Like those paintings, the book is not an accurate account or discription of Tahiti; it is more like a tapestry in which fact, fiction, dream and myth are interwoven: rich in detail, immediate in style." from the jacket flap. Price clipped. Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Size: Large 8vo. Book. …
