This was the Art Nouveau-style binding used for the publisher's Leisure…Hour Series. Endpapers have publisher's advertisements in red, including the Leisure Hour Series, dated Oct. 1887. On each front free endpaper a small bookseller's label for Clarke & Carruth, Boston. Advertisement for other novels by the author on page facing title page. At head of title: Leasure Hour Series No. 205. Former owner's inscription at head of title page in each volume: "1887 M.U. Marshall." "Author's Edition" -- title page verso. A scarce copy of the first American edition. In Near Fine Condition: edges very lightly rubbed; clean and tight.

He wrote over 60 novels, published between 1877-1926 (posthumously). He also wrote numerous series of short stories, many of which appeared in Cornhill Magazine, Pall Mall Magazine, and th…e Illustrated London News. Clarissa Furiosa, which deals with English politics and the writing career of its protagonist, is one of his middle novels. This copy is a first edition (NCBEL indicates that the American edition precedes the London, Methuen, 1897 edition). VERY SCARCE. Bound in the original tan cloth lettered in gold on the spine and front cover. Green decoration to front cover. Small spot of soiling to rear cover, else suprisingly bright and clean with tight binding. 488 pages. LIT/101416.
