Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book covers a range of surveying instruments used in the 19th century. The author begins by discussing the importance of a delicate magnetic needle and proceeds to explain how such a device made the Plain Compass a valuable tool in land surveying. The book then goes into detail about the Vernier Compass, which allowed surveyors to compensate for the variation of the needle, a problem that made the Plain Compass less effective. The author also describes the development of the Vernier Transit, a more sophisticated instrument that combined the features of the Vernier Compass with a telescope. The book concludes with a guide to the proper use and maintenance of these instruments.
