Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Reprint. A very well-loved copy of this scarce edition of the author's 19th-century historical romance, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest stories ever written about old California. This edition contains both Volumes I & II in this single volume. The Native-American love story was m…ade into a stage play & motion picture, continuing to enthrall subsequent generations, & the legend of Ramona lives on today in the San Diego County town that bears its name (note: a 18-year-old Raquel Welch played the leading role in the town's production of the Ramona Outdoor Play). Originally published in 1884) & by Little, Brown in 1900, this edition from that same publisher has an Introduction & original photographs by A. C. Vroman on both Frontispieces & 22 black-and-white plates, all with tissue overlays, There are also 26 decorative headings from drawings by famed Canadian illustrator Henry Sandham. Condition is only Fair: decorative tan cloth-covered boards show heavy rubbing to extremities, tearing at both ends of spine, & light soil. Both hinges are cracked, pages show age-appropriate tanning but unmarked. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive from us, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! All orders processed before 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time) ship that same day; later orders, weekends & holidays, very next business day. Vroman, A. C.; Sandham, Henry (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Illus. by A. C. Vroman / Henry Sandham. Near Fine. First printing of this illustrated edition. Thick Octavo. xviii + 310 pp + 308 pp, First Edition with the Vroman / Sandham photographs, 5.25" x 8" publisher's pictorial terra cotta cloth boards, emboss…ed color design laid on front with white stamped title, dark letters to spine, gilt top edge. Binding tight and square, pages clean, unmarked, top foredge slit 1/2" along the tip. Uncommon in those conditions. A novel, from 19th century American author and activist Helen Hunt Jackson, concerning the life of an orphaned Scottish-Native American child. Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) was a relentless and effective activist for America's indigenous native people. She gave a copy her polemical "Century of Dishonor" to every member of Congress and lobbied as well. But "Ramona" is probably her most enduring work going through numerous editions and remains a popular theatrical entertainment. Southern California became a tourist destination, as many people wanted to see the locations featured in the book., hence this elaborate tourist edition was created in 1913. A. C. Vroman / Henry Sandham (illustrator).
