Issued without a dust jacket. -- This is a vital reference work for medieval historians, serving as a comprehensive directory of all known documents concerning the relationship between the papacy and the churches of Vienne prior to 1198. The work catalogs the correspondence and legal interactions between the archdiocese of Vienne in Southern France and the Roman Curia. It meticulously indexes papal documents, keyed to the standard Regesta pontificum romanorum by Jaffé. The book contains rare information, such as details regarding a lesser-known church council held by Pope Gelasius II in early 1119. It includes critical notes, parts of introductory text, and extensive indices of papal letters and addresses to the Curia. The volume is notable for addressing Vienne's complex archival history, which is marked by both the loss of original documents and an abundance of historical forgeries. Reviewers in the Journal of Ecclesiastical History have praised Beate Schilling for her "painstaking work," describing the volume as an essential tool for practitioners of diplomatics (the study of historical documents). The work is considered a "lighthouse project" (Leuchtturmprojekt) by the Max Weber Foundation, representing a major Franco-German scholarly collaboration between the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and the German Historical Institute Paris. It serves as a foundational resource for researchers studying the centralisation of the medieval church and the "Europeanisation" of local diocesan administration through papal authority.…
