More important for me than accurately copying a molecule in all its details is finding a guiding principle and following it to see whether it yields artistically interesting results. The main idea underlying all my protein sculptures is the analogy between the technique of mitered cuts and protein folding. I feel I am closer to nature if I apply its algorithmic quality than if I just copy its appearance. My work is quite literally algorithmic because I calculate my cuts from scientific protein data using a computer program I wrote. Beside this deterministic side of my work, there is an equally strong intuitive and irrational side, where my pieces stop working as scientific models and become pure art objects. My sculptures offer an emotional experience of a world that is usually accessible only through our intellect. 92 pp. Englisch.

Siento que estoy más cerca de la naturaleza si aplico su calidad algorítmica que si sólo copio su apariencia. Mi trabajo es literalmente algorítmico porque calculo mis cortes a partir de los datos científicos de la proteína usando un programa de ordenador que he escrito. Además de este lado determinista de mi trabajo, hay un lado intuitivo e irracional igualmente fuerte, donde mis piezas dejan de funcionar como modelos científicos y se convierten en objetos de arte puro. Plus important pour moi que la copie exacte d'une molécule dans tous ses détails est de trouver un principe directeur et de le suivre pour voir s'il donne des résultats intéressants sur le plan artistique. L'idée principale qui sous-tend toutes mes sculptures de protéines est l'analogie entre la technique des coupes en onglet et le pliage des protéines. Je me sens plus proche de la nature si j'applique sa qualité algorithmique que si je me contente de copier son apparence. Mon travail est littéralement algorithmique car je calcule mes coupes à partir de données scientifiques sur les protéines en utilisant un programme informatique que j'ai écrit. À côté de ce côté déterministe de mon travail, il y a un côté intuitif et irrationnel tout aussi fort, où mes pièces cessent de fonctionner comme des modèles scientifiques et deviennent des objets d'art pur. Ik kijk letterlijk naar het fundament van ons fysieke bestaan door het creëren van…sculpturen van eiwitten, de universele onderdelen van de machinerie van het leven. Belangrijker dan het nauwkeurig kopiëren van een molecuul in al zijn details is voor mij het vinden van een leidraad en het volgen ervan om te zien of het artistiek interessante resultaten oplevert. Het hoofdidee dat ten grondslag ligt aan al mijn eiwitsculpturen is de analogie tussen de techniek van verstekken en het vouwen van eiwitten. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik dichter bij de natuur sta als ik de algoritmische kwaliteit ervan toepast dan wanneer ik alleen maar het uiterlijk ervan kopieer. Mijn werk is letterlijk algoritmisch omdat ik mijn sneden uit wetenschappelijke eiwitgegevens bereken met behulp van een computerprogramma dat ik heb geschreven. Naast deze deterministische kant van mijn werk is er een even sterke intuïtieve als irrationele kant, waar mijn stukken stoppen met werken als wetenschappelijke modellen en pure kunstobjecten worden. Je me sens plus proche de la nature si j'applique sa qualité algorithmique que si je me contente de copier son apparence. Mon travail est littéralement algorithmique car je calcule mes coupes à partir de données scientifiques sur les protéines en utilisant un programme informatique que j'ai écrit. À côté de ce côté déterministe de mon travail, il y a un côté intuitif et irrationnel tout aussi fort, où mes pièces cessent de fonctionner comme des modèles scientifiques et deviennent des objets d'art pur.
