Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zog er sich auf sein Gut in Bissenmoor (Holstein) zurück, um sich ganz kompositorischer Tätigkeit zu widmen. Sein Schaffen konzentriert sich im wesentlichen auf das Lied und die Oper. Während er sich mit der melodisch betonten Gestaltung seiner Lieder bewußt von Hugo Wolf fernhält, sind seine heute vergessenen Opern unverkennbar geprägt vom Vorbild Richard Wagners" (MGG XIV, 1).
