Contents: Baule art: the view from the west -- The Baule world -- Art and the Baule -- Art, darkness and visual memory -- Art that is watched: performances -- A…rt that is seen without looking: the sacred -- Art that is glimpsed: the private -- Art that is visible to all: the profane. // "This original book, filled with the insights of an author who has lived with the Baule and studied their art for more than twenty-five years, explores for the first time the full texture and details of Baule life and art. Abundant illustrations include field photographs showing artworks in the intimacy of daily lives and public performances, as well as museum photographs of Baule sculptures. Susan Vogel focuses on the creation and uses of Baule works of art apart from their definition as "art" in Western eyes. She establishes a means for understanding Baule expressive culture from the perspective of Baule individuals and often in their own words. In an extensive discussion of Baule experiences of art objects, she finds different kinds of looking and seeing - art that is watched (mask dances and entertainment performances); art that is seen without looking (works too sacred or awesome to be scrutinized); art that is glimpsed (sculptures made for personal shrines and kept in private rooms); and art that is visible to all (elaborately decorated objects that fulfill the desire for beauty and for open display of talents)." ?Publisher. // Art, Baule -- Exhibitions. Hardcover. Condition: gut. 2000. (Stiftung Lesen Leseempfehlungen, Juli 2007) Naturwissenschaften Biologie Evolution Mensch Paläoanthropologie ISBN-10 3-8274-1049-5 3827410495 ISBN-13 978-3-8274-1049-8 9783827410498 In deutscher Sprache. 272 pages. 30,2 x 25 x 2 cm.

Add to basketIn three volumes. (ca. 32 x 26,3 cm). around 450 p. Half calf (brown) with marbled boards and title to spine. Spine and boards with some low rubbing. Pages and plates inside are well preserved, few pages missing but largely complete. Appropriate to its age and type of publication (folder with loose pages) in a good condition. (=… Les Feuillets d'art: 6 issues, 1919-1920). The magazine "Les Feuillets d'art" has been published in Paris between 1919 and 1922. The two-monthly issues (originally in a folder) contained loose pages and plates from the different categories literature, theatre, art, music and fashion. The here offered issues come from the first year of "Les Feuillets d'art" published between May 1919 and July 1920 by the french journalist Lucien Vogel. The previous owner divided and rebounded the six folders and its content in three (hardcover binding) volumes. The first volume contains all table of contents for each issue, the introducing essays (chronicles), the complete "feuillets de la musique", parts from the categories "feuillets litteraires", "feuillets du theatre" and "feuillets de la mode". The second volume contains the complete section "feuillets des arts du dessin", largely in chronological order, with all the coloured and sticked illustrations (plates). The third volume contains longer texts and essays from the "feuillets litteraires" like for example Marcel Proust: "A Venise". The three volumes contain the original front cover from the folders (with decorated title) as a title page. The six issues (in three volumes) are largely complete, only a few parts are missing. In all six issues the section "feuillets de la mode" isn't complete anymore. The previous owner who once divided and rebounded the six single folders removed especially the illustrated parts of this section. As a result the section "feuillets de la mode" now only contains the text parts. Furthermore there are only 3 essays in the other sections with a lack of 2-3 pages. Nevertheless this first year of the rare magazine stills contains most of the sections. Beyond the table of contents five of the six issues additionally contain a section "feuillets de la publicité" with 4-9 p. of contemporary advertising for galleries, publishers and products. The very rare issues of the first year contain authors and artists like Marcel Proust, Jean Giraudoux, Anatole France, Paul Claudel, Henri de Regnier, Rosny, Leon Bakst, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Mille, Bourdelle, Roger Allard, Georges Duhamel, Helene Dufau, Courbet, Joseph Bernard, Georges Lepape, Verlaine, Ravel, Canudo, Abel Hermant, Jean Ryeul, Picasso, Francis Carco, Jourdain, Andre Salmon, Cesar Franck, Ruhlmann, Emile Verhaeren, John-Storrs, Michel Dufet, Labath, Marcel Willard, Odilon Redon, Paul Fort, Andre Gide, Dardé, Renoir, Gabriel Mourey and many more. While the literary texts contain the whole spectrum of prose, poems, essays and drama the often coloured and sticked illustrations (plates) contain paintings, drawings, sculptures, advertising, antique furniture and more. - Please feel free to ask for more photos of the rich illustrated Art Deco magazine, we'll answer as soon as possible! - - - ACHTUNG!
