"Hugh MacDiarmid, an exacting critic, said that Violet Jacob belonged 'to the small list of Scottish novelists of either sex whose work rises into the category of literature'. She was acknowledged as a prominent novelist before she had published any verse of note. But her merit as novelist and short story writer has been overshadowed by her success as a poet. While her poems have continued to appear in anthologies up to the present day, her prose has for some years been out of print. This collection of 'lost stories'-two novellas and seven short stories brought to light in 1977-will restore public interest in her prose. They all show, Ronald Garden says, her sense of humour, her ability to tell a story and convey character, and her talent for writing spare and vigorous prose. "The Lum Hat' opens in an east coast seaport, clearly Montrose and therefore near to where Violet Jacob was born in 1863 and where she spent her early life. She married an Irishman, a Major of the 25th Hussars, with whom she lived in various English garrison towns and also in India. For the last ten years of her life she lived in Kirriemuir. She was working on the two novellas when she died." Minor shelf wear to top edge of unclipped dust jacket. Both book and jacket are otherwise in excellent condition. All contents are tight and clean. There are no inscriptions.
