In particular it describes the courageous exploits of local Parliamentary commander William Sydenham and has garrison. Against highly unfavourable odds they managed to retake Weymouth from the Royalists and also withstood Lord Goring and his 6,500 strong army with just 1,300 men. Prof Ronald Hutton has called it 'the best work written about the events in and around Weymouth during the war'. First edition, signed by author on title page. Green boards, with some staining/ spotting to pages, particularly to bottom of p26/27 (does not infringe upon text). V.slight (5mm) fold to right bottom edge of pages (title to p27) o/w sound. d/j good to v.good, slight bumping at corners and v.minor indentations to rear. No tears and unclipped. In 1645, several royalist plotters within the twin towns of Weymouth and Melcombe on the Dorset coast conspired to deliver the ports back into the control of King Charles 1. It has been suggested that he needed a safe south coast port at which to land a huge French army which he hoped would deliver a decisive blow and end the resistance of the Parliamentarians whom he had been fighting for almost three years.
