A travers ces "Histoires" Polybe visait à exposer "par quels moiens & par quelle sorte de gouvernement il s'est pu faire, que les Romains en moins de cinquante-trois ans soient devenus maîtres de presque toute la terre". C'est l'occasion pour ce grand historien de l'art militaire qu'était le Chevalier de Folard (1669-1752) d'exposer son commentaire technique mais aussi ses appréciations personnelles ; l'ouvrage s'ouvre d'ailleurs sur le fameux "Traité de la Colonne" que le grand Frédéric de Prusse daigna commenter.
