Einband fast durchgerissen. - Genau so wie auf deutscher Seite die Militärs und Schwerindustriellen gemeinsam für Annexionen französischen und belgischen Gebietes im Falle des Sieges der Zentralmächte kämpften, verlangten die französischen Heerführer und Industriebarone Annexionen deutschen Gebietes für den Fall der Niederlage Deutschlands. Und zwar genau mit den gleichen Vorwänden und aus den gleichen Erwägungen wie die Ludendorff, Stinnes und Hugenberg. Nur mit dem Unterschied, daß Deutschland infolge der wahnwitzigen annexionistischen Pläne dieser Kreise den günstigen Augenblick für einen annehmbaren Frieden verpaßt und den Krieg bis zum totalen Zusammenbruch fortgesetzt hatte, so daß die deutschen Erorberungsziele nur noch als üble und belastende Erinnerung zurückblieben, während die Sieger, vor allem die Franzosen, in der Lage waren, die Erfüllung solcher imperialistischen Pläne praktisch zu betreiben. Die französische Heeresleitung hatte schon während des Krieges behauptet, daß die Sicherheit Frankreichs, das nicht ganz 40 Millionen Einwohner zählte, gegenüber dem 65 Mil-lionen starken Deutschland unmöglich für die Zukunft garantiert werden könnte, wenn das Reich seine Einheit in der bisherigen Form behalten würde. Nicht nur Elsaß-Lothringen - das ursprüngliche und angeblich einzige Kriegsziel Frankreichs - sollte wieder an Frankreich fallen, sondern auch das gesamte linke Rheinufer sollte vom Reiche politisch losgelöst und, wenn nicht direkt durch Frankreich annektiert, so doch zumindest als "Pufferstaat" unter dem politischen Einfluß und der militärischen Kontrolle Frankreichs "selbständig" gemacht werden. Das Saargebiet aber sollte überhaupt restlos Frankreich zufallen, zumal es ihm ja in der napoleonischen Zeit gehört hätte! Die Militärs um Foch argumentierten damit, daß das Rheinland als strategisches Aufmarschgebiet für Deutschland in einem künftigen Krieg dienen könnte; und außerdem würde das Ruhrbecken, das Herz der deutschen Kriegsrüstungsindustrie, im Schutz eines deutschgebliebenen Rheinlandes ungestört die Vorbereitungen für die Revanche treffen können (S. 2) Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
