Ragion per cui se vince non ne resta sorpreso; ma se perde ripete fra sé avrei potuto fare di meglio, non ci ho messo tutto il mio valore, tutta la mia attenzione. Perché questa considerazione possa dirsi corretta, il giocatore dovrebbe basare l'idea della sua forza non solo sulla media delle precedenti vittorie ma anche su quella delle sconfitte. Ebbene, l'amor proprio impedisce alla mente di rivivere le brutte partite abbastanza fedelmente da controbilanciare il ricordo delle partite vincenti. Il giocatore dunque finisce per sovrastimarsi costantemente, e in perfetta buona fede. Cornetz si occupa soprattutto del giocatore di scacchi, ma le sue osservazioni valgono per tutti i giochi che non sono puramente d'azzardo, per la lotta, gli scontri di scherma e, si potrebbe aggiungere, per le battaglie militari, persino le più importanti. Guidare una battaglia significa giocare una partita. La psicologia del giocatore è anche quella del generale. Quante battaglie perse perché il generale si attribuiva un valore superiore a quello reale!
