The Forties -- the War Years and Post - war Years for the United States, and against this background of momentous events and of struggle for survival, life went on and the detective-crime-mystery story continued to be written - in its own fashion. At the start of the decade in 1941, Philip Van Doren Stern published an article cleverly titled "The Case of the Corpse in the Blind Alley." In it Mr. Stern wrote: "The great need of the mystery story today is not novelty of apparatus but novelty of approach. The whole genre needs overhauling, a return to first principles, a realization that murder has to do with human emotion and deserves serious treatment. Mystery story writers need to know more about life and less about death -- more about the way people think and feel and act, and less about how they die." Mystery story writers listened, and if they didn't actually read Mr. Stern's warning, the strong hint of danger and its consequences was in the air for them to think about and feel and react to. So they turned away from some of the characteristics of The Golden Age -- rather, they modified and changed them, and adopted a new approach, taking Mr. Stern's words to heart. And in the 19 stories in this volume you will see clear evidence of these modifications and changes -- the beginning of a new Golden Age, or perhaps, more accurately, of a Renaissance. Happy reading!" - from the Introduction by Ellery Queen.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Signed and generically inscribed by Rod Vickers upon title page. xii, 139 + vii, 73 pages. Footnotes. Black and white maps and illustrations. A brief history of archaeology in Alberta is presented and the Plains region of the province is described. Classificatory systems for organizing Plains prehistory are reviewed. The possibility of a mid-Wisconsin occupation, and the implication of the Late Wisconsin ice-free corridor are considered. The problem of megafauna extinction and over-hunting is briefly examined. The second paper addresses the question of the positions of various Plains Indian tribes across the southern Alberta landscape at about the time of first European influence and, later, actual European contact. The primary data sources consulted ar the published historic and ethnographic accounts of the four tribes given serious consideration - the Blackfoot, the Kutenai, the Gros Ventre and the Snake or Shoshoni. Clean and unmarked with light wear. A nice copy. Signed by Author(s).
