Ebd. - Max Verworn (1863 - 1921) studierte seit 1883 Medizin und Naturwissenschaften in Berlin, wo er 1887 zum Dr. phil. promoviert wurde (Beiträge zur Kenntniss der Süsswasser-Bryozoen). 1889 legte er in Jena bei Wilhelm Biedermann das medizinische Doktorexamen ab. 1891 habilitierte er sich für Physiologie, wurde 1895 a.o. Prof. in Jena, 1901 o. Prof. in Göttingen und folgte 1910 einem Ruf als Nachfolger Eduard Pflügers nach Bonn. Seit 1908 war er Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. Er arbeitete vor allem zur Zell- und insbesondere zur Nervenphysiologie. Er setzte sich für Psychomonismus und Konditionalismus ein und veröffentlichte u.a. eine Allgemeine Physiologie (1895), Naturwissenschaft und Weltanschauung (1904), Die Mechanik des Geisteslebens (1907) und Kausale und konditionale Weltanschauung (1912).
